Okay, so Bryce shows up and says he really needed to talk to Sarah. And, well...I know those two had a history and all. Not to mention the fact that this was Bryce Larkin who, while possibly saving my life once, ended up ruining it. And he was somewhat oblivious to that fact. I mean...he was surprised that I was living with Ellie and wasn't some software mogul. What did he expect? He got me kicked out of Stanford. You know...it does sorta come up on the background checks that I was EXPELLED, thanks. That fact doesn't exactly win potential bosses over.
I dunno if I would have arranged the meeting if he hadn't mentioned, oh, I dunno, the fact that the Fulcrum guy is after the Intersect and thus - after me!
Great. Just great.
So at Thanksgiving dinner, I whisper to Sarah that Bryce is waiting for her. She gets up and goes off. Times passes and then Captain Awesome and Casey are talking. Basically Awesome thinks it might be a good idea for Casey to try some water sports. Then he asked me, "Hey Chuckles? Are those rafting brochures still in your room?"
"What?" I asked, lost in thought.
"Don't worry about it; I'll get 'em," suggested Awesome.
Uh-oh!
"No-no-no-no-no. I'll get 'em. You guys, please, keep t-talk," I sputtered as I went off to my room.
And so I get there and peek through the slightly opened door and what do I see? Bryce and Sarah - making out.
What to do, what to do... Walk away Chuck...cool off for a moment. Don't be rash and race in there.
So I walk back to my seat. And I'm pissed at this point. I'm counting in my head trying to calm down as a round table discussion of what we're thankful for is going on. It gets to be my turn and without thinking, I say out loud, "I'm thankful that Bryce Larkin is dead and is not currently in my bedroom making out with my new girlfriend."
Casey clears his throat and excuses himself.
Good. That'll show Bryce. Casey'll probably scare the daylights outta him...maybe take a swing at him..., is what I first thought.
Then, Wait...Casey said 'If you get a chance to shoot Bryce Larkin, you shoot to kill.'
But Casey wouldn't open fire. Not now. It would blow the cover.
He wouldn't risk it.
He wouldn't actually kill Bryce, would he?
"Chuck, are you okay?" Ellie asks and it's at that moment a little voice in my head says, Yes Chuck, he WOULD.
"Okay, I might have made a mistake..." And as soon as I said that, I jumped up and dashed off to my room. When I got there, Bryce had fled and I see Casey is holding his gun in his hand.
Regardless of how pissed I was, Bryce didn't deserve a death sentence.
Casey would have killed him.
And it would have been my fault.
