The Fanfic Meme
Saw this on my personal flist and thought to share it with the museverse. :)
1. How about a brief introduction?
Hi, I'm Laurie. In addition to being Chuck's mun, I also am the mun for The Banker (
cynical_shadow) and Emma Wilder (
taughtbymimzy).
2. What got you into fan fiction (and/or adopting muses)? I added the muse adopt question to this one.
Mostly to amuse myself and my brother. I had some old fics for The Legend of Zelda that I think I wrote when I was 11 or so? I might have written some things before that but those were the first ones I remember. My brother and I sometimes wrote stories together too.
As for adopting muses, I'm a member of
bl_fans (on my personal LJ) and the muse journals of
alan_shore and
brad_chase used to be mentioned now and then. It just seemed like a fun idea to get to write ficlets and role play with a particular character and I just figured someday I wanted to adopt one. It was about a year after I heard about
theatrical_muse that I decided to adopt the Banker for the heck of it to at least try my hand at the ficlet stuff. The Banker was a muse I thought would be fun just to make myself and others laugh reading him. Wasn't sure I'd RP much with him, but actually sorta did for awhile as he was received pretty well. (Honestly, I was scared that since he's basically a canonless muse that people would be like 'wtf?! are you outta your mind?' or something.)
Emma was a bit of an experiment for awhile to write a younger muse. But she didn't work out for me really. On occasion, she'll chat in
sixwordstories but that's about it.
As for Chuck? I just love his character to pieces. He has some character traits I identify with. (I'm rather shy myself until I get to know someone. Plus I have my own sorta geeky interests and stuff too.) And just some of the storylines...I find myself cheering for him or wanting to give him a hug or something depending on a particular episode's events.
Because I really like the character so much though, there's always been a part of me that worries I don't have him 'right' voice wise. I don't want to mess up when I write him. Right now I'm pretty confident with his RP replies. His prompt responses I'm still a bit so-so on so it meant so much that the last one I wrote was so well received!
3. What kind of fan fiction do you write?
Mostly now, just ficlets and prompt responses. I don't really feel too inspired to write long stories anymore. I used to, especially in the day where I was majorly into Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?. I still have some fics I never finished and most likely, never will.
4. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
Uh...not quite sure what that means. But I don't tend to write say all 'shipper fics or buddy fics. Just whatever I'm inspired to write.
5. What is your most popular fic and why do you think people like it so?
Hmm. Maybe some of my older cartoon fics. People were amused by them.
For Chuck thus far, it's the Impossible one. It's a moving ficlet, I think.
6. Forgot other people, what is the fanfic you've written that you're most proud of?
I don't know about my older fics anymore. If I went back and read them, I'd probably notice my weaknesses with structure and dialogue being 'off.'
For Chuck, thus far yes, I really do like Impossible one as well as Sorrow. It wasn't my intention to have the two responses follow each other like that, but I think that response inspired the Impossible one.
For the Banker? The child one. It's cute and fun. And the It's War! one. It's evil, yet amusing.
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
Very difficult overall. Organizing the story is tough. Sometimes you have an idea of how to get the story from point a to point b and it just doesn't work out.
Plus in my head, Chuck actually speaks in stammers and pauses. So sometimes trying to get an organized response from him is tough.
8. Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.
Well, I've already gushed about why I like Chuck himself.
As for pairings? I am a Chuck/Sarah 'shipper. Not the type that would just write fluffy pairing fics though. But I like their storyline. I want things to work out for them regardless of all the issues that stand in the way of the two of them actually being able to be together. I get why the roadblocks exist and it makes sense that they do. Even though they can be on and off relationship wise, it's not because either of them does something really foolish. (That irks me with couples. Sometimes it seems like the writers are just coming up with ways to keep them apart just to keep them apart. That just drags, in my book. If it's logical there's issues, fine. If it seems over the top to keep them apart? That irks me. (Studio 60 was REALLY guilty of that.)
9. Are there any fan fiction trends/cliches you hate?
Yes - when people pair two established enemies as a loving couple for no other reason than to just put them together.
10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
Nope.
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
Maybe Zelda? I can't really remember since that would be going back 20 years. But no, I don't.
12. Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
Well, as I said, I am a Chuck/Sarah shipper. And for friendship OTPs, nothing beats Denny Crane and Alan Shore.
I haven't written any OTP stuff though yet.
13. What would you call your writing style?
Dialogue driven. I always have preferred writing what characters say rather than what they do.
14. Do you read other people's fan fiction? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Yes of course. I would say in general I tend to read journals of characters I'm familiar with more than others. It's just because I know their stories better, but I try to read anyone recommended to me if the muse is one I'm not completely familiar with.
15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
I don't know. Not sure what I'd like to write per se. Part of me does want to end a certain Carmen Sandiego fic I wrote ages ago just to end it, but since my friend created the main character in the story, I kinda feel guilty about him not having a say in how the story ends.
16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
No, as long it's legit critiques. I don't like the 'OMG Y DID U RITE THAT? IT SUCKS!!!!!111' type of stuff, it irks me. That's why I don't post much to sites like fanfiction.net and such. Even though there are legit reviewers out there, there are a bunch of asshats who just flame your work just to do so.
17. When you write, is there anything that helps?
Outlining. That and sometimes posting entries privately as I work on them and then posting the public version when I'm do. That way if I'm inspired to write part of it, I can at least make sure that's in text before I lose the idea.
18. What inspires you?
Other than the source material and the prompt ideas?
I don't know really. Sometimes an idea just bubbles to the surface. I might be bored at work and just want to entertain myself. And then I come up with an idea that might end up working.
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction experiences and you as a writer?
I guess as a fanfic writer, I've had my ups and downs. But who doesn't, right?
As a writer, I just want to make sure I do the characters justice. If I feel I'm not, it bothers me a lot. I can be too heavy on the dialogue though. In some respects, I wonder if I'd be a better playwright than actual author.
As a general rule, I tend to write in the G - PG-13 range. I just am not one for adult stuff. I don't care if others write it and will read it on occasion though. But personally, it doesn't interest me to write smut.
20. Tag some friends, because they'll hate you for it.
Nah. If you want to do this, go right ahead. :)

OOC
Antagonistic pairings are kind of my guilty pleasure, so long as it's in character and they don't forget the fact that the characters really can't stand each other. I hate it when writers pair the characters, and turn them into fluffballs. Drives me up a wall.
