I thought at least maybe...you know, Sarah and I could get together but...something happened that changed that. I didn't want to say that to her but I was worried about her.

What happened?

This is going to take some backstory. You remember how I mentioned Bryce before, right?

*Hiro nods.* He was horrible to you. A very bad friend. And he told your school you were cheating when you were not. He is also the one that made sure the Intercept was downloaded into your head.

That's him all right. I asked Sarah if it was okay if I told you this and she said it was all right.

I found out something about Bryce...something that kinda changed things. While on a mission, Sarah and I discovered this disk with a bunch of CIA files on it. And there was one with my name on it. I clicked on it and it was of Bryce telling my professor that the CIA shouldn't recruit me because he was afraid I'd die in the field. My professor said my test results on the subliminal image test were so good the CIA had to find out and that I'd be very valuable for the Omaha Project...whatever that was. So Bryce came up with a plan that he'd report me for cheating so that my results would be invalidated and so I wouldn't be recruited after all. So...by lying, he sorta rescued me then. Sarah made me promise I wouldn't tell anyone about that file. Not even Casey knows...so, don't say anything, okay?

Anyway, after Bryce sent me the Intersect, we did think he was killed by Casey. But it turned out...Fulcrum kept him alive to find out more about what he did with the Intersect. He told me the plans to destroy the first one were part of a mission and that he was here to protect me from Fulcrum and all. And he did. But then he went back undercover to stop Fulcrum and he came back again.

I was going to visit Sarah and Bryce was at her apartment. They worked together before and he was telling her about a mission to recover a device that had the new Intersect files on it. So Casey and I joined on the mission. And at one point, a Fulcrum agent held me at gunpoint. Bryce made a move to pretend to surrender, handing over his gun and the Intersect device over. He signaled to Sarah to shoot the Fulcrum agent but Sarah couldn't do it.

Casey ended up shooting the agent, actually.

So...later on...Bryce talked to me. He said he thought Sarah couldn't take the shot because she liked me too much and that her feelings for me almost cost me my life and the device.

I...was worried for Sarah. I...*sighs* didn't want her to be hurt because of me. So...I told her... *looks down for a moment*

I told her she was an amazing person but that we couldn't have a real relationship because I was just a normal guy who wants a normal life and she would be this great agent off saving the world and...

I sorta broke up with her to save her.

*Sits down hard.* Oh, Chuck, I am so sorry to hear this. But you really still love her, do you not?

And Casey will hear nothing from me about any of this.

*sits down next to Hiro looking crestfallen* I do, Hiro. It hurt so much to say that. But I didn't...I couldn't have her...

I couldn't have her getting hurt or...worse, killed, *swallows* be-because of me.

That is hard - protecting the one you love even from yourself. That is true love, Chuck.

I finally told Jack about my ability.

I hope...that someday...she understands. *his lip quivers slightly*

*tries to calm down a bit* You-you did? How did he take it?

That would be good. I still think you two belong together, but I know what it feels like to love someone whom you have to leave behind. Time separated Yaeko and me. There may be a time in the future that you and Sarah can be together. It just is not right now.

I am not certain if he believes me, though he knows it explains much. He knows nothing about you, I made certain of that. Of course, if he asks me if you know, I will tell him you do. I just do not know how to explain it that does not sound like he is less of a friend unless he just accepts a yes/no answer.

*nods sadly* And the only way you could be with her would be to live in the past or bring her to the future. But doing either would probably change a lot...

I hope someday Sarah and I can be together...with no covers and no lies. *sighs*

Did you show Jack what you could do like you showed me? Just wondering if he got to see what you can do with his own eyes yet.

And, well...maybe you don't have to tell him exactly when you told me. But if he asks...well, I think you've known me a little longer than you've known Jack, right?

*Hiro nods.* She needed to be in the past to make sure Kensei's story was told. I could not stay there because I could have changed even more than I possibly did.

Yes, I did show him. It is always the easiest and irrefutable way to show my ability. It is hard to argue when I can disappear from right in front of you to some distance away.

True, I have known you longer than I have known him.

*nods sadly* Yeah. And even after Kensei's tale was complete...well, taking her to the future would still be a tricky thing. After all, if she had children in normal history, that line might not exist if you brought her to the future.

When did you first meet Jack? I first met him about a year ago. And you I met...pretty much a year ago too.

It would have been my line. She married into the Nakamura clan.

I think I met Jack about 7 months ago. You mentioned him before that, though.

Oh! Well then you definitely couldn't have moved her out of time. Then you might cease to exist!

Yeah. I met Jack a couple of weeks before I met you, actually.

And certainly it would not do me any good to wipe out my family.

I did not know that. I thought you had met him after. How did you meet him?

Not at all!

I first started talking to him after he commented on my entry about tangoing with Captain Awesome. Then he came to the Buy More one day to get some iPod speakers and I met him in person then.

Journals seem to be a good place to meet people...and that sounds like we are picking up women in a bar.

*grins* It kinda does.

You told me about it. That he taught you the woman's part.

I thought I did. You just seemed so amused by the sound of that I wasn't sure if I told you or not.

Awesome has yet to teach me the guy's part.

It is still funny to think about.

If your sister can tango, it would probably be best to ask her to teach you.

I did ask her, but she didn't know how to tango.
