TM #223 - "I swear I didn't put those..."

"I swear I didn't put those Easter baskets in the kids' bedrooms," I remember my mother saying to my Dad.

This was Easter morning when I was eight years old. My mother had spied me with a ring of milk chocolate around my lips.

"Chuck sweetie?" she began.

"Mmm?" I answered, still with a bite of chocolate bunny in my mouth.

"Did you wake up early and get your Easter basket?"

I first tried to shake my head, but she shot me a look that basically said, "I know you did." So I nodded sadly.

"How did you find it?" she asked.

"Well," I began, feeling guilty, "Last year you hid our baskets in the towel closet. And the year before that, you hid them in the kitchen cupboards. So...um...Ellie and I looked in the towel closet and then in the kitchen cupboards. And then we found them. And you and Dad were still asleep and we uh...well, helped ourselves."

"Your sister found her basket too?" my mother asked. I could tell by what she said that she already knew, but I think she wanted me to confess this fact.

I nodded and my Dad went into Ellie's room.

My mother shook her head. "Chuck, you and Ellie were supposed to wait for us to wake up before you got your baskets. I'm very disappointed in you."

I bowed my head.

"Hand over your basket," my mom commanded, holding her right hand out.

I timidly handed the basket over. Most of the candy was still in it, but the chocolate bunny was currently headless.

"You and Ellie won't get any candy for the rest of the day."

I sighed.

"Now c'mon," she said, motioning for me to follow. "Let's get you cleaned up."

And as I stood in the bathroom while my mother washed the chocolate off my face, I heard Ellie scream, "You tattled, Chuck!" and growl before storming off in a huff.

Despite getting caught, it still was a good Easter though. Ellie, my Dad, my mother and I went out for dinner at nice restaurant. My Dad wasn't around much, so it was great for the four of us to be together.

Sadly, this isn't possible anymore...

*Hiro wants to hug Chuck for missing his mom and dad.*

*looks at Hiro and notices his sad expression*

It wasn't meant to be a downer of a story, but...I guess it did sorta end on a sad note...

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I miss my parents. Even though my mother died when I was young, I still miss her.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
*nods sadly* That's completely understandable.

I'm sure you wish you could have gotten to know her better.

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
*Hiro nods.* I can't really remember what she looked like, even with the family photos. Most of them are posed, which really does not show the true face of the person. I remember her voice mostly. She would sing songs to us.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Like lullabies or would she like to sing a little of everything?

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Mainly lullabies, but other things, too. She had a beautiful voice. I did not inherit it.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
*smiles* Sounds like a nice memory to have of her though.

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
*Hiro nods.* I always thought she was so pretty, but I am not sure if that's because I saw she was or if it was because she was my mother and all mothers are beautiful to their children.

I used to do the same sort of thing as a kid too.

[identity profile] not-a-savage.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean, how can you not get caught? Once something's missing you can't really replace it.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-24 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Plus once you open a bag of candy, even if you don't eat anything inside it, you can't really reseal it.

[identity profile] not-a-savage.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless you buy a new bag, but we were a little too young for that.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...plus it wasn't like there was a store close enough you could run to to buy that candy from.

[identity profile] machi-in-snow.livejournal.com 2008-03-25 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what it is like to not see your parents often. At least you have your memories of them.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I guess that's the important thing. *sighs*

ooc: The story on the parents is still somewhat vague, especially on what happened to their dad.

[identity profile] machi-in-snow.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I... am sorry though. It must be difficult not being able to see your parents.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ellie and I basically learned how to live on our own. We kinda celebrate the moment we learned to take care of ourselves with our own Mother's Day dinner. It's not anytime near the actual Mother's Day. In fact, it's in October.

[identity profile] machi-in-snow.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
*blinks* Why is yours in October?

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because that's when our mother left us.

I know; why call it "Mother's Day" when it's the day she left us? It just...was something Ellie and I decided to do.

[identity profile] machi-in-snow.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
*suprised look* That... is... different. What you wish to celebrate is your own choice.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's a sort of...coming of age day to us.

[identity profile] machi-in-snow.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I understand. It is similar to the time when I moved out of the main house to my own apartment.
