TM #292 - Show and tell.

We used to do show and tell every couple weeks in preschool and kindergarten.

I remember back when I was in kindergarten, I brought in this Return of the Jedi pop-up book. I loved that thing when I was a kid. There was a page where there would be a light saber battle between Luke and Darth Vader and the pull tab would make the beams go up and down and there was one where this net would go up and stuff.

Okay...so by then, Return of the Jedi was three years old. And some of my classmates thought I was a total nerd for wanting to bring this thing in. But it was one of my favorite books and was a bit worn from being read a few times over. It still was in decent shape though.

Despite a few snickers, I got through Show and Tell okay talking about how much I liked the book. I thought everything would be all right and I could take my treasured book home to enjoy later. But on my way back to my mat, this kid, Jason Fredricks, took the book from me and ripped part of my book. He ripped Darth Vader's light saber from the book and threw it in the trash. I remember running frantically to the trash can trying to find it amidst the pile of empty milk cartons from snack time.

My teacher ended up putting Jason in a time out and while she was doing so, I managed to find the light saber piece and placed it inside the book to repair when I got home.

That night, I told my Dad about what happened at Show and Tell.

"I almost cried," I told him. "But I didn't wanna seem like a baby."

"I know you love that book and I'm sure we can patch it up," he assured me. And with some surgical precision and clear Scotch tape, he mended the torn light saber. "There. Good as new....almost."

I tugged the pull tab and Luke and Darth could still fight each other fairly well, even with the tape. "Yeah. Thanks, Dad."

He patted my head and went off on his own while I amused myself with the pop up light saber battle.

Awww! Of course, we're obviously going on the same wavelength because I was going to have something similar with Hiro.

Really? What was it that Hiro was going to bring in for show and tell?

The pop up book I had Chuck talk about we used to have, actually. It was kinda fun to pull the tabs to make the characters move.

A Superman action figure. Of course, his classmates would all be, "He's not as good as Ultraman or Kamen Rider", etc.

I don't remember the pop-up book myself. I had a lot of SW stuff, but not all of it.

Aw. I'm going to love reading Hiro's show and tell. :)

It was a cool book. I wonder if it's still around somewhere...

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2009-07-26 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now I kinda feel like I shouldn't, cause it would be a poor second to yours.

Do you have all your SW stuff?

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-26 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? :(

We actually didn't have too much of it and to be honest, most of it was books. I don't think we have that stuff anymore, which is a shame.

Oh yeah. No doubt in my mind.

Yeah, we seem to lose things along the way all the time.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Aw.

Yeah, we do. Probably got moved around and is hiding somewhere or one of my parents dropped it in a donation bin at some point...

How're things going? Are you still on the longer schedule?

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Everyone in the company got a 2.5 hour work week increase. :P

Things are still kinda busy over here with everything going on with my brother too so I haven't really been in the RP loop too too much...

Oy, that must be a thrill. As in..not.

Don't worry about us. How is he doing?

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's not. The 3 day weekend is nice but the long hours are tiring.

Well, he goes for radiation treatment on Wednesday. They found another tumor in his brain so the radiation is to remove that.

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I can deal with the longer days, but you're already doing 10+, right?

Sorry to hear he has to do more radiation.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I used to work 35 hours and now I work 37.5. (That's full time with the company I work with.) So, I now work three 9.5 hour days and one 9 hour day.

Actually, this is the first dose of the radiation. I thought he was going for radiation last week, but last week they just did tests and prep work for the radiation process.

At least you get 3 days off. You take the middle of the week, right?

So, has it happened? If so, how's he doing?

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Now I work Monday-Thursday. I used to get Wednesday off but now I get Friday off.

It happened today. He's tired but overall feeling okay so far.

[identity profile] powered-otaku.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
When I worked at the FBI, I had Fridays off. I actually prefer the Mondays off, honestly.

Glad to hear he's holding up so far.

[identity profile] nerdherdchuck.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Seems a lot of places are closed Fridays. Doing appointments on Fridays isn't as easy as the other days of the week.

Me too.

Murphy would have beat that kid up for Chuck.

Very cute.

Chuck thanks Murphy for the offer.

And thanks, glad you enjoyed it. :)
